Painting is Messy - Full Cleanup Guide

Here is a guide to cleaning up brushes, rollers, and spills for the various types of paints discussed earlier:

Latex Paint (Acrylic Paint)

  • Cleaning Brushes and Rollers: Rinse thoroughly with warm soapy water. Use a brush comb to remove paint from the bristles. Rinse until the water runs clear.
  • Cleaning Spills: Wipe up immediately with a damp cloth. For dried spills, use warm soapy water and scrub with a sponge or brush.

Oil-Based Paint (Alkyd Paint)

  • Cleaning Brushes and Rollers: Soak in mineral spirits or paint thinner. Rinse well with soapy water after most of the paint is removed. Use a brush comb to clean the bristles. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
  • Cleaning Spills: Wipe up immediately with a rag soaked in mineral spirits or paint thinner. For dried spills, apply more mineral spirits and scrub with a brush.

Enamel Paint

  • Cleaning Brushes and Rollers: Use mineral spirits or a specific enamel paint thinner. Rinse with soapy water once the majority of paint is removed. Clean the bristles with a brush comb and rinse thoroughly.
